The tealight holder had no design theory behind it, unlike some of the other pieces I have posted about.
However! To please the tutors, I said this:
As humans, we make ourselves look presentable and perfect on the outside when in reality, we are putting on 'make-up' to hide the infections we all carry around inside of ourselves.
The polished outside represents the 'make-up' whilst the dull inside, are the imperfections we all carry.
The candle, representing 'the light of the world', is there to remind us that we are one with Christ and perfect in his eyes.
That description apparently was enough for the tutors!

Home Communion set - cruets
Every home communion set needs a cruet or two. How else will the priest transport the blessed wine?
As my gran was a keen collector (possibly by accident!) of salt and pepper shakers, it seemed only right to use one of the 100's we had stored away in boxes!
To keep the set simple, we used the most simple pair we could find which had both salt and pepper shaker present. Like my gran use to say, why complicate something when it works the way it is?!
So there you go, both salt and pepper transformed into usable cruets for a communion set!

Nightmare to go through!

Home Communion set - chalice
This is the design behind the chalice:
The shape of the cup is that of a teacup. My gran, or my mum's mum, always had a cup of tea near by and was always offering them to everyone!
The spiral stem represents the Holy Spirit and my mum's enjoyment for helter skelters.
The height of the stem holds 3 marbles perfectly. Again, representing the Holy Trinity.
The concept of the marbles was the childhood memories of my mum. Always playing, collecting and swapping them with friends.
To reflect the 'swapping' part of these memories, I did this...
So this could happen...
So this could happen...
Now any set of 3 marbles can be used to reflect the person having communion, or a memory, or even part of the religious calendar.

Home Communion set and marbles
I've been meaning to post this for awhile now but the last 2 and a half years since finishing uni, I've been trying to forget the terrors of going in the first place!
This is my final degree project and is the set I exhibited at my degree show.
My tutors did not support this project as I had been a jeweller and not a silversmith for the whole of my degree. They had no choice but to support me as I ignored their opinions, thoughts and idea's and made what I wanted to make (Barbara Franc).
So here it is, my mum's home communion set; inspired by her mum with the added love of marbles!
Keep an eye out for more posts as I explain each piece!
